Great weather over the weekend

Last weekend with the temps nearing 50 degrees the fair weather fly anglers hit the water. Ice dams have broken loose making the frozenn rivers fishable again. I think the flow of anglers made the fish scarce in alot of the holes and fishing was slow. Fishing prince and soft hackle nymphs proved to be the best choice on the river over the weekend on the gallitan. Madison river anglers reported some good success on buggers. The temps have fallen again and chased the fair weather fisherman back off the river so its a great time to bundle up and head back out.
Just a reminder on febuary 16th the maddison gallitan chapter of trout unlimited will be having there trout fest banquet and fundraiser. Tickets are available at www.ticketriver.com.

Flooding

The fishing on the Gallitan and Madison has been tough with the ice dams that have formed and flooding that has followed. The fishing accesess near ennis are closed due to the flooding and sections of the east gallitan fishing access are closed as well. It shouldnt be long now that the ice dams have broken loose and water levels should become normal within the next week. Untill the dams the fishing was great as long as you hiked in search of some open water that you could access. Big ugly streamers are performing well in dark colors purple being the best.
Picked up my tickes to the MGTU troutfest banquet scheduled for Feb. 16th the tickets are available online at www.ticketriver.com hope to see you there.

COLD

Temps have been crashing in SW montana over the last few days making it tough to get out on the rivers, but when its cold outside and have been forced indoors its helping to fill my flyboxes by tying a dozen in the evenings. The weather the next few days is looking to be in the 30s and it will be a good time to hit the river again. Merry Christmas and tight lines

Warm weather = runoff

With southwest montana seeing almost 2 feet of snow in the valleys and more above 6000 ft and now warm temps are giving the rivers a much needed boost to the water levels. With the lack of rain all summer long the rivers were flowing very low and making it tuff for fish to pass. With the higher levels of water the fishing has been very good on the gallitan and east gallitan rivers. With hunting season winding down and hunters in the woods trying to fill there tags last minuet fisherman have had the water to themselves and having a great time throwing flys at the hungry browns. I have been fishing weighted buggers to great success. Get out and enjoy the higher water and warm weather while we can before we know it we will be layering up to fish the water. Tight lines

Snowy browns

Well we have had some snow fall over the past week and cold temps along with it. Most of the hatches have stopped and we have switched to buggers in brown and black and seeing great action. If you head out to the river you can have it almost to yourself as the colder temps have drove the fisherman away and they have headed into the woods to chase big game. With the elections only a couple of weeks away i want to take the time to say please look into your canidates and see what there plans for our fisheries are, with all of the shoreline of the yellowstone already leased to oil companies just waiting to start the hydrofracking it has many outdoorsmen and women nervous and with good reason its the YELLOWSTONE RIVER! Good luck to all fellow flyfisherman that are braveing the snow and cold chasing those big browns.
